Cancer in Ohio
In Ohio, cancer is the second most common cause of death, accounting for nearly 1 in 4 lives lost. (AmericanCancer Society) Kateswell was founded to help address this societal crisis.
Cancer claimed the lives of 25,507 Ohioans in 2016 at a rate that was 11 percent higher than the U.S. population. (Ohio Cancer Report 2019)
In 2019, the AmericanCancer Society (ACS) estimates that 25,440 lives will be lost to cancer in Ohio – that’s nearly equivalent to the population of Zanesville, Sandusky, or Wooster. (U.S. Census 2010)
And, the ACS estimates 67,150 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Ohio in 2019. (Cancer Statistics Center.) That’s more than double the new-case estimates for neighboring states like Kentucky (26,400) and West Virginia (12,440). (Cancer Facts & Figures 2019)
Today, there are approximately 581,350 cancer survivors in Ohio, and that is something to celebrate. (Cancer Treatment & Survivorship Facts & Figures) But, we know that survivors and their families need ongoing support. We want to do all we can to help them, and to increase their numbers.
